Isabelle Day Refuses to Die of a Broken Heart

After her father dies, thirteen-year-old Isabelle Day leaves Milwaukee with her mother for Minneapolis in the early 1960s. At her Catholic school, she becomes close to neighbor Margaret and gradually finds her place with Margaret and Grace. The elderly McCarthy sisters downstairs befriend Isabelle and her mother, despite Isabelle’s early suspicion of them. As she grieves, Isabelle also begins to confront more difficult memories of her father and the truth of his suicide.
