I Got a Chicken for My Birthday

Laura Gehl, illustrated by Sarah Horne

A girl wants amusement-park tickets for her birthday, but Abuela Lola gives her a chicken instead. The chicken has little interest in food or laying eggs; it has a list of supplies and a construction plan. Its requests range from steel girders and a winch to cement, animals, and pom-poms. The chicken directs a complicated building effort, putting animals to work and later involving Abuela Lola. With each new development, the narrator recounts what the chicken has done. The unusual birthday gift eventually produces a fully functioning amusement park.
