Lise Meitner dreams of becoming a scientist at a time when girls were discouraged from pursuing careers, especially scientific ones. Her work contributes to the discovery of protactinium and later to identifying nuclear fission. An Austrian Jew working in Germany, she loses her job under Hitler’s rise to power and escapes to Sweden with colleagues’ help. Otto Hahn receives the 1944 Nobel Prize for work they had shared without acknowledging her contribution. Meitner refuses to help develop the atomic bomb.
