Gem & Dixie

Gem and her sister Dixie grew up with parents who struggled with addiction, and Gem often cared for Dixie when they were younger. Now both are in high school: Dixie makes friends easily, while Gem is isolated and often hungry as their mother struggles to meet the family’s needs. When their father suddenly returns with money, Gem distrusts him while Dixie is excited. After Gem discovers money he has left behind, she sees a way for the sisters to leave. Their trip means adventure to Dixie and survival to Gem as they clash and slowly find some shared ground.
