Ga’s / The Train
Jodie Callaghan, illustrated by Georgia Lesley
A girl walking home from school finds her elderly uncle waiting beside abandoned railroad tracks. He tells her about the trains that once brought rations to Native families in the area, and about the train that instead took him, his siblings, and cousins away to boarding school. There, the children were mistreated and prevented from keeping their Native identities. Years later, he remains at the tracks, waiting for what was lost to return. The story moves between the girl’s present-day visit and her uncle’s memories.
