Forever Is Now

Mariama J. Lockington

After witnessing police violence against another Black teenager, Sadie’s anxiety becomes severe agoraphobia. She spends the summer at home in online therapy, fearing danger outside, especially for Black people. Sadie finds connection through Ruckus, an activist-focused TikTok space where people organize and exchange resources; she also discusses mental illness and Black joy there. As therapy helps her take outings with her new neighbor Jackson, Sadie plans an open mic centered on Black joy before taking part in a protest.
