Fourteen-year-old Cree girl Eva lives with her younger brother Marcus and their grandmother, Nokhum, in a small Canadian community. Their mother’s alcoholism and unreliability have long made life uncertain, while Nokhum provides care and stability. After Nokhum breaks her hip, a frightening incident leads to Eva and Marcus being placed in separate foster homes. Eva resents the separation and distrusts her social worker, but gradually builds trust with her foster parent, housemates, and mother as her mother works toward recovery.
