After the Mur zhree invade Earth and years of war end, Donovan serves in a force policing his district. Altered with zhree technology as a child, he can form a protective outer shell. A resistance raid leaves him captured and held because his father is the district’s senior human liaison to the zhree. Donovan’s loyalties are tested when he discovers that the resistance’s chief propagandist is his mother, who left after failing to prevent his alteration.
