Emergency Quarters
Carlos Matias, illustrated by Gracey Zhang
Ernesto, a Dominican American boy, is newly allowed to travel the six blocks from home to school without his parents. Each morning his mother gives him a quarter for a possible emergency and tells him to use a pay phone if he needs her. Over the week, he passes tempting chances to spend the coins at a bodega, a video-game shop, and a juice stand. The quarters make him feel secure, and by Friday he has five when an unexpected emergency occurs.
