Astronomer Shadia Habbal studies the sun’s corona, which can be observed outside certain observatories only during a total solar eclipse. The book follows her global expeditions to gather data during the brief one- to two-minute period of totality. For the August 2017 eclipse, she organized teams at five sites in the western United States to improve their chances of clear viewing. Clouds and other obstacles could prevent imaging, so the teams’ work carries uncertainty as they prepare for the eclipse and capture the corona.
