In Southern California, Alyssa and her ten-year-old brother Garrett face an abrupt loss of running water as Arizona blocks the Colorado River amid shortages. Their parents initially expect the problem to pass, but empty stores and escalating panic reveal a wider crisis. Alyssa’s neighbor and classmate Kelton comes from a family prepared with food, water, weapons, electricity, and a hidden supply site in the woods. Alyssa, Garrett, Kelton, and a teen named Jacqui undertake a difficult trip toward that refuge while the shortage turns neighbors against one another.
