After Little Charlie’s sharecropper father dies in an accident, the family is left in debt. The plantation overseer Cap’n Buck says the debt will be cleared if twelve-year-old Charlie helps recover people who escaped slavery years earlier. Charlie travels north with Buck and is expected to gain the trust of Sylvanus, the escaped couple’s son. As he encounters the people being pursued, Charlie begins to question what he has taken for granted about slavery.
