Teenager Maverick Carter becomes responsible for his infant son when the baby’s overwhelmed mother leaves and disappears. Maverick’s mother helps, but insists that caring for the child belongs to Maverick. With money needed for formula and diapers, he takes an after-school job at a local store after promising his cousin Dre to stop selling hard drugs. Balancing work and parenting leaves Maverick exhausted, though he loves his son and worries about what lies ahead. Gang life in his neighborhood remains difficult to escape, even with Dre’s protection. After a nearby shooting death, Maverick reconnects with Lisa, a former girlfriend he still loves.
