Coming Home: A Hopi Resistance Story/Tutuqaykingaqw Nima Hopisino Pahan Tutqayiwuy Ep Yorhomti

Mavasta Honyouti, illustrated by Mavasta Honyouti, Marilyn Parra

Artist Mavasta Honyouti recounts his grandfather’s childhood after he was compelled to attend Keams Canyon boarding school in the early twentieth century. The story describes Hopi families resisting the removal of their children and the threats made against men who protested. At school, Mavasta’s grandfather was required to choose an English name and endured separation from home, while trying to retain his language and cultural knowledge despite punishment. He eventually returned home. The bilingual English-and-Hopi narrative is accompanied by painted woodcarvings.
