Clayton Byrd Goes Underground
Rita Williams-Garcia
Clayton Byrd loves playing blues harmonica alongside his grandfather, Cool Papa Byrd, and other musicians in the park. After his grandfather dies, Clayton’s mother bans his music and sells Cool Papa’s possessions. Grieving and struggling at school, he skips class to find the bluesmen. On the subway, he plays with beatboxing dancers until an older teen takes the hat that is his final keepsake from Cool Papa.
