Bye, Penguin!

Seou Lee, illustrated by Seou Lee

A small penguin becomes separated from its community when the ice beneath it breaks away. Riding the drifting piece of ice, the penguin travels beneath the Southern Lights, through ice caves, and past landmarks in Rio de Janeiro, New York, and Sydney. Its ice raft shrinks throughout the journey. A brown-skinned child with a surfboard reaches the penguin in time, and the penguin later returns home on the board. The nearly wordless narrative uses the penguins’ expressions to convey emotion and includes a climate-change message in the breaking ice.
