Bedtime Bonnet

Nancy Redd

As evening arrives, the youngest child in an African American family watches everyone prepare their hair for bed. Her brother tends his locs before putting on a durag, while other relatives use wraps, rollers, scarves, and a wave cap. After her own braids are arranged, she cannot find the bonnet she usually wears. Searching through the household leads her back to each family member and, eventually, to a playful surprise from Grandpa. By morning, the family’s hair-care routines begin again in reverse.
