Set in an alternate version of 1957 where dragons exist but are widely mistrusted, this novel follows Sarah Dewhurst, a biracial girl whose widowed father hires the Blue dragon Kazimir to clear their farm. Sarah is drawn to Kazimir’s thoughtful nature. Elsewhere, Malcolm, connected to a cult that reveres dragons, has been assigned to kill Sarah because of a prophecy. His certainty begins to erode when he meets Nelson. As federal agents pursue Malcolm, Sarah and her friend Jason face racist violence, and events eventually carry Sarah, Malcolm, Kazimir, and an agent into a parallel 1957.
