During World War II in Windyedge, Scotland, Louisa Adair cares for Jane, a retired German opera singer. They share rooms at a pub with Ellen McEwan, an RAF volunteer driver who conceals that she is a Traveller because of prejudice. Louisa, who is Black Jamaican and British white, faces racism, while Jane downplays her German heritage. When a German pilot lands carrying an enigma machine for decoding messages, he must hide it at the pub before his intelligence contact arrives. The group becomes involved in a tense intelligence mission.
