Bathsheba serves as Third Apprentice to Captain Alexandra among hunting whales, whose word for water is “sky” and whose “abyss” is the human world. Their society has its own culture and history, and its hunters pursue humans largely in self-defense. When the captain finds a ship and its lone human survivor, she sees a coin as evidence pointing to Toby Wick, a feared human killer of whales. Assigned to guard the survivor, Bathsheba begins to question the captain’s pursuit, their planned killing, and the stories used to justify violence.
