An Occasionally Happy Family
Cliff Burke
Two years after his mother’s death, twelve-year-old Theo takes a trip to Big Bend National Park with his father and older sister, Laura. Theo dislikes the eight-hour drive and camping, while their father is enthusiastic about the vacation. The siblings encounter a birdwatcher and his social-media-focused teenage son during a hike. Their father has promised a surprise, which turns out to be time spent with Lucrecia, his previously undisclosed girlfriend. Theo, Laura, and their father then confront their grief over the children’s mother.
