Sixteen short stories, framed by an opening poem and a closing poem, converge at an annual intertribal powwow in Ann Arbor. Native children and young teens arrive as dancers, vendors’ children, travelers with Choctaw Elders, and family visitors. Some have long-standing cultural ties, while one character begins exploring Native heritage and another considers belonging and identity. The stories connect through the preparations, travel, and gathering at the Dance for Mother Earth Powwow.
