Amelia Westlake Was Never Here

At a private girls’ academy in Sydney, Harriet and Will create the fictional student Amelia Westlake to challenge sexual harassment, sexism, and hypocrisy at their school. The invented student first appears in a cartoon criticizing the swim coach, then becomes the name behind further acts of resistance that the administration tries to stop. Harriet is a high-achieving student, while Will frequently challenges authority, and the two reluctantly work together. Natasha Nguyen, Will’s friend and the school-paper editor, later joins them as they address homophobia and racism. Harriet and Will are both gay and gradually confront their mutual attraction.
