Fifteen-year-old Shamiso returns to Zimbabwe with her mother after her journalist father dies in a car accident. Rumors that he was murdered compound her grief, and she keeps her identity and distance from other students at her new school. There she meets Tanyaradzwa, a talented singer whose cancer has returned with a tumor on her vocal cords. Neither girl wants pity, a shared feeling that draws them together. When Tanya’s condition worsens, Shamiso pulls away because she cannot bear the prospect of another loss.
