Across the Ice: How We Saved the Ojibwe Horse

At Lac La Croix First Nation, two siblings await the arrival of horses while Nookomis tells the history of the Ojibwe horse. Long ago, Indigenous people worked with the ponies, feeding and sheltering them while the horses helped with travel and traplines. After government actions reduced the herd to four mares, community members moved them across a frozen lake to safety in Minnesota. A farmer then bred them with a mustang stallion to continue the line.
