A Scarf for Keiko

During World War II, Sam’s classroom makes socks for soldiers, but he has trouble learning to knit. His neighbor Keiko is skilled and offers help, yet hostility toward Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor leads Sam to follow his friends in avoiding her. Sam’s parents recognize the prejudice directed at their Japanese neighbors. When Keiko’s family is sent to an internment camp, she entrusts Sam with her bicycle and gives him socks for his brother. Sam learns to knit a scarf and sends it to Keiko.
