A Game of Fox & Squirrels

Jenn Reese

Eleven-year-old Samantha and her older sister Caitlyn are staying with their aunt Vicky in Oregon. Caitlyn has a broken arm, while Sam wishes she could return home. Aunt Vicky gives Sam an old card game, and Sam later encounters its fox and squirrel characters in the woods. The fox promises that winning challenges will earn Sam a Golden Acorn and a wish to go home. But the demands become increasingly troubling, reflecting the dangerous behavior of the sisters’ father and the reason they have come to stay with their aunt and her wife.
