In fourteenth-century England, sixteen-year-old Edie is sent to work at the priory of St. Christopher rather than enter its religious order. She becomes close to a postulant named Alice and is assigned to make ink in the scriptorium. Edie has kept secret that she perceives sounds as colors and that color affects her deeply; working with lapis lazuli leads to a trance and a vision. When plague reaches the priory and nearby town, Edie witnesses disease, suffering, and fanatical reactions while caring for those who are ill. Her relationship with Mason brings further conflict at the priory.
