A Ceiling Made of Eggshells

In late fifteenth-century Spain, Paloma, known as Loma, grows up in a Jewish neighborhood where Jews are required to live. After her grandmother dies of plague, Loma’s grandfather Belo begins taking her with him on his travels, valuing her quick mind. Over the following decade, she learns about his efforts to use wealth and connections to seek protection for Jewish communities amid increasing danger. As some Jews publicly convert and her own family faces new risks, Loma must reckon with obligations to Belo’s work and with the future she had imagined for herself.
