The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal recognizes outstanding nonfiction for children, honoring the authors and illustrators who make factual subjects clear and engaging. The Association for Library Service to Children presents the award each year for an original informational book published in English in the United States during the preceding year. Its audience extends from birth through age fourteen, so selections can differ substantially in format, length, and complexity. Judges consider accuracy, documentation, organization, language, visual presentation, and helpful features such as maps, timelines, and indexes. A Medal recipient is named, and additional distinguished titles may receive Honors. The award offers families a way to discover biography, science, history, and other subjects through books that explain as well as invite curiosity.
