A girl is nervous about visiting Zola, the new neighbor next door, despite their mothers’ hopes that they will become friends. She becomes convinced that Zola has an elephant and imagines the two of them too occupied to want company. Each imagined scene is paired with a wordless spread that reveals another explanation for what she has heard, as Zola waits alone. Eventually, the narrator gathers the resolve to knock on Zola’s door, opening the way to a new friendship.
