Zenobia

Amina is a Syrian girl whose village is caught in a war. When events become overwhelming, her mother tells her to remember Zenobia, the Syrian warrior queen who ruled a realm stretching from Egypt to Turkey and fought Rome’s emperor. The story connects Amina’s experience of conflict with the historical figure her mother invokes as a source of strength. It uses sparse drawings and few words to convey the impact of war on children.
