You Can’t See the Elephants

Mascha spends each summer with her grandparents while her father copes with the death of her mother by immersing himself in work. Lonely and grieving, thirteen-year-old Mascha befriends Julia and Max, two younger children living nearby. She notices their bruises and eventually witnesses their father hurting Max. Her grandparents and other adults refuse to believe her because the father is respected in the community. Convinced she must protect her friends, Mascha makes a plan to hide the children in an abandoned house.
