Wishtree

Red, an elderly oak, tells the story from its place as the neighborhood’s wish tree, where people fasten cloth messages carrying their hopes to its branches. Red faces mortality while trying to help the neighborhood welcome a Muslim girl. The narration uses gentle humor, and black-and-white illustrations accompany the story. At its center are a tree’s long view of its community and the effort to make a newcomer feel welcome.
