Tag has been confined to her boarded-up home since her older sister was taken by the snowy squalls that carry off children under fifteen. Restless and isolated, she receives a message asking her to slip outside and meet other children. Armed with a lucky ribbon, a rope made from clothing, and a forbidden fairy-tale book, Tag joins Boots, Ren, Ant, and the older Finn. Their plan is to reach the Unknown and search for the missing children. After Finn is taken, Tag must guide the group farther into the forest despite her reluctance to lead.
