Why Is Everybody Yelling? Growing Up in My Immigrant Family

In this graphic memoir, Cookie grows up in a Catholic household shaped by her family’s wartime history. Her mother survived hiding in Italy during World War II and a gunshot wound, while her first husband, Jacob, was killed by Nazis. Cookie’s older half-brothers also witnessed those events. As Cookie copes with her mother’s anxiety and criticism and her brother Piero’s mental illness, she gradually learns why relatives bear numbered tattoos and discovers her family’s past in fragments.
