In 1976, four young people from differing backgrounds recount intersecting lives during the Soweto student uprising in South Africa. Zanele, an African student who also sings in a nightclub, secretly organizes opposition to the Afrikaans Medium Decree Act, which requires English and Afrikaans in schools. Her friend Thabo is not politically involved; he leads a local gang that takes money from an Indian shopkeeper. The shopkeeper’s daughter, Meena, sympathizes with the students.
