We Still Belong

Twelve-year-old Wesley Wilder has a poem called “We Still Belong” published in her school newspaper for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. She is also hoping to ask Ryan, a boy she knows through gaming club, to the school dance. Instead, she pauses to support another student who is visibly upset. Wesley is most discouraged by responses to her poem: classmates largely say nothing, and her teacher criticizes it for not taking the kind of position he expected about Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day.
