Daniela entered the Medio School for Girls at twelve with forged citizenship papers after her family crossed the border into Medio. As graduation approaches, she is selected to become Primera, the intellectual confidante and first wife of Mateo Garcia, whose family has political ambitions. Carmen, Daniela’s school rival, is chosen as his Segunda. A resistance group opposing border rules and immigrant crackdowns asks Daniela to gather information from Mateo’s household, while her relationship with Carmen begins to change.
