Wat Takes His Shot: The Life & Legacy of Basketball Hero Wataru Misaka

Cheryl Kim

Wat Takes His Shot is a biography of Wataru Misaka, a Japanese American basketball player who grew up in Ogden, Utah. Racial segregation kept him from Utah State's dormitories, and he slept beneath the bleachers while trying out for and joining the college team. Although crowds insulted him, Misaka and another Japanese American player helped lead their team to a championship. After military service, he returned to college basketball. In the 1947 draft, the New York Knicks selected him, making him professional basketball's first non-white player and first Japanese American player.
