Under a Fire-Red Sky
Geraldine McCaughrean
At the start of World War II, four teenagers waiting to be evacuated from Greenwich decide to leave the train and return home. Lawrence, Olive, Franklin, and a girl called the Gremlin each face a different situation in London during the Blitz. Franklin wants to become a firefighter but is turned away because of his age, while Olive’s father is troubled by the deaths of fellow firemen. The four gradually spend time together, wandering the city while learning about local history.
