In the autumn of 1983, seventh-grader David Horowitz is shaken after watching a television movie about a nuclear attack. He is also preparing for his bar mitzvah while navigating conflict between his Chinese grandmother, Wai Po, and his Jewish grandmother. David's longtime friend Hector joins him and a new friend, Scott, on a trivia team. After they win, Scott invites David to help build a fallout shelter but excludes Hector, adding another strain to David's friendships and fears.
