The Stone Thrower

Jael Ealey Richardson, illustrated by Matt James

This picture-book biography follows Chuck Ealey as he grows up in Ohio during the 1950s and 1960s. As a child, he repeatedly throws stones at passing coal trains until he can hit his target, then brings the same persistence to football. When he is asked to play quarterback, rival players object because he is Black, but Chuck stays focused and leads his team to victory. The account also covers his pursuit of an education, his undefeated high school and college career, and his later football career in Canada after racism keeps him out of the NFL.
