The Range Eternal

Louise Erdrich, illustrated by Steve Johnson, Lou Fancher

In the Turtle Mountains, an Anishinaabe narrator remembers helping her mother cook soup on a blue enamel woodstove called The Range Eternal. In winter, its fire warms the home and offers protection from the Windigo ice monster. Looking through the stove’s mica window, the child imagines animals that once lived across North Dakota and takes flight among birds. After electricity arrives, the stove is replaced. As an adult, the narrator finds the old range in a thrift store and brings it home to share its warmth, stories, and history with family.
