The Patron Thief of Bread

Duck, the youngest member of a band of street children called the Crowns, moves with the group to Odierne in Avilogne. Their leader, Gnat, forges papers that place Duck as an apprentice to baker Griselde, allowing her to pass bread and coins to the Crowns. But Griselde treats Duck with kindness, feeding and educating her as though she were family. Torn between the people who raised her and guilt over stealing from her new guardian, Duck’s loyalty becomes a source of conflict with the Crowns.
