The Passover Guest

During the Great Depression in Washington, D.C., Muriel’s family cannot afford the food needed for a Passover Seder. They leave the door open for Elijah, even though they have no wine to place in his cup. On her way home before sundown, Muriel sees a poor man performing magic who suddenly appears transformed. The same visitor soon arrives at her home, and the family’s empty table becomes a meal abundant enough to share with their Jewish community. The story adapts a tale by I. L. Peretz.
