The Only Black Girls in Town

Alberta lives in Ewing Beach, California, with her dads and has long been the only Black girl in town. She surfs and spends time at the beach with Laramie, her white best friend. When Edie, a Black girl from Brooklyn, moves across the street with her mother, she and Alberta quickly become close. Edie discovers journals in her attic written by Constance, a Black woman who passed as white in the 1950s and early 1960s. Alberta and Edie follow the journal’s story to learn what became of Constance.
