An old truck remains on a small family farm as a Black family’s only child grows from toddlerhood to adulthood. The truck stays beside the barn while family life changes around it, eventually falling into disrepair and rusting in place. The girl has worked with her parents and tinkered with machinery since childhood. After inheriting the farm, she repairs the truck and gets it running again, sending it off from the page at the story’s end.
