The Nutcracker in Harlem
T. E. McMorrow
This retelling of “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” takes place in Harlem’s Sugar Hill neighborhood during the 1920s. At a Christmas Eve party filled with jazz, Marie receives a drummer-boy nutcracker from Uncle Cab. Although she is afraid to sing with the adults, a dream by the Christmas tree leads her to play a drum and guide toy soldiers against a mouse army. The story combines a holiday gathering, music, and fantasy while drawing on Harlem’s history.
