Rudger is Amanda Shuffleup’s imaginary friend, visible only to her until Mr. Bunting comes to their door. Bunting hunts imaginary friends to prolong his own life. After Amanda is injured while escaping him, Rudger begins to fade and is rescued by a cat. The cat brings him to a library where imaginary friends without children can shelter. Although Rudger is urged to choose another child, he is determined to return to Amanda, who is unconscious in hospital.
